19 th Century Rosewood Tea Caddy When determining the design for this caddy, the craftsman seems to have decided that the quality of the veneer should speak for itself. As a result he has added minimal decoration. Judging by the result he was probably right. With its rectangular shape and measuring approximately 12 x 6 x 7 (all measurements are in inches) this is a caddy that deserves respect. The grain is particularly good and the choice of veneer means that it flows across the front and sides without interruption. The only decoration is provided by a reed and bobbin edge to the lid. Apart from those marks that might be expected of an item of this age, including a minor split in the top, the only significant problem is a slight reluctance of the lid to close in one corner. However, age has also given it a rich colour and good patina. Brass has been used to create the military style carrying handles and to line the escutcheon. While the lock looks to be original sadly t is no key with which to test the working of the mechanism. The hinges also look original and are designed to prevent the lid from falling fully back. Inside the lid has been lined with rosewood and the same material has been used in constructing the removable canisters. Judging by the marks inside the lid, the mixing bowl is either original or has been in place read more
