Rocky Forest Stream, 19th Century by Alexander Brownlie DOCHARTY (1862-1940) to £5,000 Circa 1900 Scottish School Impressionist Study of a Forest Stream, oil on canvas by Alexander Doch arty. Precisely detail and fluidly painted study of the stream with neat variations o f the rocks and very expressive treatment of the surrounding foliage. Good condition, two marks a t the very top, signed bottom right and presented in a gilt frame. The Artist Alexander Docharty was a landscape painter based at Kilkerran, Ayrshire. Like his uncle, the artist James Docharty, Alexander had started in calico design. He became a professional painter in 1882, after part-time classes at Glasgow School of Art. He later studied in Paris. Alexander Docharty’s paintings – of the Scottish Highlands and of Europe – are mainly in oil, although he also produced watercolours.
