Travellers in a Woodland Landscape, 19th Centuryby Benjamin BARKER OF BATH (1776-1838) Fine 19th century English woodland travellers landscape, oil on canvas by Benjamin Barker of Bath. Open view of a country landscape with travellers in the foreground and smoke rising from the chimneys of small cottages in the distance. Good quality throughout and plenty if depth and perspective to appreciate upon viewing. Presented in a gilt frame and comes with details of the painting/artist and an old price tag £455 (both from a gallery). Good condition, unsigned, relined.The painter Benjamin Barker was the younger brother of ThomasBarker (Barker of Bath), and the son of the painter BenjaminBarker the elder. He was largely self-taught, learning by copying the pictures of other artists, including those of his more famous brother. Once established, he made sketching tours to the more picturesque parts of England and Wales, occasionally accompanied by his brothers Thomas and Joseph. He exhibited in Bath, sometimes jointly with Thomas, and also sent works to the British Institution and the Royal Academy, where he exhibited from 1806-38. However, his reputation remained largely local.
