ABOUT THE PAINTING: Title: Shipping at the Herd Groyne Lighthouse, South Shields, Tyneside. Built by Trinity House in 1882 it consists of an upper hexagonal part, including the lantern, of wood and corrugated iron construction, sitting on 12 cylindrical steel legs. Painted red and stands 49ft high. Artist with Dates: Bernard Benedict Hemy (1844-1910) Description & Condition: Watercolour, mounted, glazed and framed. Signed lower right B Hemy. Strong colours (with little fading) and no signs of any foxing or water damage. In gallery condition, as the picture has been previously owned by John Nicholson Fine Art, Durham (see label on verso) & was sold for £695.00. Measurements: 55cm x 66.5cm (including frame) ABOUT THE ARTIST: Bernard Benedict Hemy (1844 - 1910). Marine and Coastal painter in oil and watercolour. Born in Newcastle to Henry F. Hemy, brother to Charles Napier Hemy and Thomas Marie Madawaska. He lived in Australia for some two and a half years. When returning to Newcastle he studied at the School of Art in Newcastle, before leading a seafaring life whilst preparing for priesthood. Neither of these retained his interest and he returned to his love of painting.
