This is a wonderful example of a 19th Century wood piggin. This utensil was made for the purpose of scooping or as a dry measure. To really appreciate this piggin, you almost have to hold it and touch it. The surface is exactly what you would expect from this early of a piece. The surface is just great in the interior of the piggin, with an old grungy dirty patina. The piggin is completely put together with stave construction like a firkin or sugar bucket. But I feel the most amazing part of this piggin is the oversized iron bands which hold it together. And if you take note the iron bands are held securely with huge iron rivets. It is in very good condition except one broken piece of wood on the top of the piggin's handle (an early loss). The measurements are 5 1/2 inches in diameter, and 6 1/4 inches tall including the handle. I hope you can appreciate the form and construction from the photo gallery. I think it's a good one!
