Mid 19th Century Pen and Ink drawing on paper by Michele de Napoli (Michele de Terlizzi 1808-1892).. Either a hand drawn sketch or an engraving, it is an untitled biblical scene which appears to be of the stigmata of St. Francis. Short Biography : The artist studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples painting in oils, tempera, fresco, crayon and watercolor. He is noted as a neo-classic Neapolitan artist whose subject matter most often was that of religious and historical themes and to a lesser degree, portraits and mythological artworks. Much of de Napoli's body of work were completed as ecclesiastical commissions and public commissions to be installed in Neapolitan museums and churches, including the Teatro Piccini in Bari, Capua Cathedral, Church of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples and during the last quarter of the 19th C, the Cathedral of Terlizzi. De Napoli's most known and noted artwork is 'The Death of Alcibiades' (1839) which was awarded a gold medal and bought by the King of Naples. This particular work, depicting what we believe is St. Francis could have been used as a preparatory drawing for a more complete painting, fresco or altarpiece by the artist..
