Offered for Sale: Beautiful Early Hand Blown Stiegel-Type Etched Glass Wine Decanter. This elegant decanter's form and decoration was named for one of the first European glass makers to come to America in order to set up factories which could compete with fine English and European glass houses, that man was Henry William Stiegel. Stiegel had several glassworks in the Manheim Pennsylvania area which produced high quality glass for the colonies. Skilled glass workers were brought from Germany and elsewhere to settle in the town which Stiegel developed as a glass making powerhouse. Those workers later moved to other glassworks and took with them the skills and designs first employed at Stiegel's factories. This decanter was probably made in one of the secondary factories however it is quite old and might date back to the late 18th or early 19th century however I am not an expert. The decanter has an open pontil scar and the glass is very wavy and irregular. I am uncertain if the stopper is original to the piece. The etched design is simple with solid flowers, grape clusters and curling ribbons. The neck is etched inside to receive the stopper, the etching is irregular. The stopper fits but there is play so it tilts a little. The decanter was difficult to photograph and pictures cannot do it justice. Condition: Good given its age however there is a chip in the lip as shown. There are bubbles in the glass and they are elongated and thin where the neck is stretched. There are swirls in the glass. There is a small chip in the edge of the base of the stopper and a few small flecks on the upright volutes. There is a rough area on the decanter where it appears the etcher's wheel may have skipped. The decanter is being sold as is. The decanter measures 9" H without the stopper and 11.5" with it. The base is about 6" in diameter and it weighs 1 lb. A terrific addition to anyone's Early American Glass collection. Payment Method: PayPal Please Shipping: USPS Priority or Express I will combine postage with other items.
