Antique 1880's HMS "HERO" British Royal Navy Pewter Mess Bowl I identified the bowl from a Cowan's auction The HMS Hero was an Ironclad Conqueror-Class Battleship in the Victorian Royal Navy. Launched on October 27, 1885 and commissioned in Portsmouth in May, 1888. A Ram was her main armament and she had only two main guns. By the time she was launched, ramming had been disregarded leaving her and her sister ship exposed as perhaps the two most useless turret armed battleships ever built. Her guns were limited to firing at an arc of 45 degrees on either side because firing over the bow caused damage to the deck and firing abaft the beam caused damage to the bridge. The condition is very good w/ NO dings, chips, dents. Has a very dark...old patina. There is a number 3 on the bottom. Measures 5 3/8" x 2 1/4". An interesting antique piece of British Naval history.
