This is an early clockworks bottle roasting jack. The case and works are brass. It comes with the original wheel that is cast iron and made to hold the meat suspended from it. These were hung inside a fireplace or attached to the mantle. The key wind clock works rotated the meats slowly so they cooked evenly on all sides. It is signed Salter Co, 25. There were 3 Salters in London making clocks and jacks in the late 1700s and early 1800s. I have seen one other roasting jack signed Geo. Salter. This is a nice complete jack that is in good working condition. Size is 17 long overall and the meat rack is 7in diameter.
