This is a rare and stunning, antique, hand-painted Vajrayana Buddhist thangka of the Tathagata, Shakyamuni Buddha, holding begging bowl and displaying the "Earth Blessing" mudra. He is flanked by two monk attendants and surmounted by The Wheel of Dharma, which he turns with his teaching, and from which emerge garlands of wish-bestowing jewels. From his hridaya, or spiritual heart, Shakyamuni emanates a red and a white heart-drop, known as tigles - manifestations of the essential substances common to all human beings. This indicates to me an alignment with the innermost secret Dzogchen (and/or Mahamudra) teachings of trekcho and togyal, recognized as the pinnacle teachings within the Nyingma and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism. As such, the depiction is very unusual, and, I would venture, exceedingly rare. I know I've never seen another thangka like this one. The painting is masterfully done entirely in mineral pigments and gold on gessoed homespun linen and framed in silk brocades of the same period. The naturally sourced colors are especially vibrant and saturated. Note the brilliant coral in the offering array and the lapis lazuli sky.Very good condition with some wear commensurate with age and nomadic devotional use, the most significant being an abrasion in the sky on the right and some evidence of moisture in the upper-left read more
