ATTENTION: Please read this description carefully and email me with any questions before bidding. Remember to check this listing during the auction for any addendums I may add. This extraordinary "magnum" size sulphide weight exhibits sumptuous color and wonderful artistry. The sulphide portrait rests on a quatrefoil cushion which displays distinctly floral characteristics. Although it brings to mind a hibiscus blossom, I suspect it is not meant to represent a specific flower type. The latticino bands surrounding the edges of each 'petal' impart a lacy etal quality that is especially sophisticated touch. But the effect that brings this weight to a whole other level of artistry is the deep fuchsia red layer of glass under the chartreuse of the blossom. At first this seems to be lost visually...however, by raising the blossom well above the base the glass artist has enabled the fuchsia to reflect off the bottom of the weight and surround the chartreuse. This creates a remarkable chromatic effect employing a knowledge of reflective light properties which puts it well beyond the normal straight forward color techniques commonly used in the crafting of paperweights. It was clearly intentional and brilliantly executed. It also explains the very high profile and wide flat base. Lacking the necessary references, I have made no attempt to identify the subject of the sulphide in this weight, however, my intuition based in experiencetells me that the man depicted is American (Henry Clay?). The thickness of theweight makes me think of the New England Glass Co.In generally excellent, unpolished condition with moderate wear to the top, a very shortnick / scratch center top and a tiny shallow semi-circular surface fracture approx. 1/3 ofthe way down the side from the top. Also, a couple of tiny fleabites to the bottom rim (see photo). As un-restored weights go, this one is in much better than average condition. Size3 & 1/2" greatest diameter by 2 & ½" height. My reasonable reserve is based on and well below ebay comparables and is set to protect my investment. The identification and dating of Antiques and Decorative Arts is at times a more or less subjective endeavor. For a variety of reasons, one 'expert's' results can differ from another's. My descriptions are based on my researches and experience. The time to question these, is before bidding, not after. I go to great lengths to be as accurate as possible and to provide enough photographs to allow the buyer to exercise their own judgment. However, I cannot be responsible for differing opinions, when brought into play after the close of an auction. If you remain uneasy about an item I am listing, even after contacting me, the decision to bid will be your responsibility. I have regretfully had to 'draw this line', due to a rash of disreputable deadbeat buyers, who have attempted to back out of their purchase commitment, by interposing the 'opinion' of a non-substantiated third party. This despite the fact that the object was accurately represented and well photographed.PLEASE NOTE: Unless it's absolutely unnecessary, ALL of my items are shipped double boxed, with sufficient buffer/packing room all around in each box. I am a meticulous packer, taking time and trouble to try and insure that the item arrives undamaged. I do not charge for materials or handling. However, my scales is not calibrated to the Post Office scales, and the difference of an ounce can alter the cost of shipping by $1 or more, up or down (the price changes at the first ounce over the even pound weight). I do my best to be as accurate as possible when calculating shipping, but cannot be responsible for any discrepancy between my scales and that of the Post Office.Shipping & Ins. by USPS at buyer's expense. IMPORTANT: The only way to insure rapid shipping is with a POSTAL MONEY ORDER wh...
