Krugerrands are minted as legal tender in South Africa by the South African Mint Co. and contain 1 Troy oz of gold in a 22 karat (91.67%) alloy with copper. The Krugerrand, first minted in 1967, was the first bullion coin that contained precisely one ounce of gold for investment purposes, and was conceived as a means for individuals to buy gold. Still the most famous and widely owned gold bullion coin in the world. With all the turbulence and uncertainty in the financial markets precious metals are one of the safest places to be.
