FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION "Sinking of the Titanic & Great Sea Disasters: Thrilling Stories Told By Survivors - Memorial Edition" by Jay Henry Mowbray RMS Titanic hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912 and sank in the early morning hours of April 15th. More than 1500 people perished in this atlantic crossing, her maiden voyage. Within weeks, various accounts of the tragedy were being sold door-to-door, and these became known as the "instant books". They are not the highest-quality publications: inexpensive paper was used and, because of their instantaneous nature, some of the stories told have been proven to be historically incorrect. Nevertheless, many of these narratives are still available in modern paperback reprint form. As is the usual case with these instant books, the reader is promised all sorts of lurid detail: "vivid accounts of heart-rending scenes, when hundreds were doomed to water graves," "soul stirring stories told by eye witnesses of this terrible horror of the briny deep", "graphic descriptions of hundreds swept to eternity beneath the waves" and "panic stricken multitudes facing sure death." The book being sold here is an original hardback from 1912: exactly 99-years of age. It is a great read. I have been collecting Titanic books and materials for more than thirty years and have only come across two of these pale green versions of the Mowbray book. (The dark blue versions are less scarce and have a different picture of the Titanic on the cover). The book is moderately worn, with fading of the title and bumped corners; pages are for the most part not soiled or loose. Spine is strong, with a few small fabric tears.
