STS-7 Mission Photograph Signed by Dr. Sally K. Ride, 1st US Female Astronaut! Dr. Sally K. Ride was a Group 8 Astronaut Selection. She joined the corps in 1978 with a group that was the first to include female astronauts. On June 18, 1983 Ride made history by becoming the first U.S. female astronaut to fly in space. She was Mission Specialist on STS-7 and made headlines around the world. She would also be the first woman to fly twice in space serving as a Mission Specialist on STS 41-G. Dr. Ride was training for a third flight into space when the Challenger accident halted all NASA flights. She served on the committee investigating the causes of the accident. When the Columbia Orbit broke up upon re-entry in 1991, Dr. Ride was again chosen for the committee investigating the accident. Today she lives in Southern California and serves on the faculty of a major college. Dr. Ride has also done extensive work in the education of young women in engineering and science through her foundation. Item is an 8 x 10” photograph of the Orbiter Columbia in Earth orbit.
