CLASSIC ANTIQUE MILAS (Melas) PRAYER RUG, Southwestern Anatolia, 1st half of the 19th Century, and in excellent collector condition. The exact size is: 4'-1" x 6'-1" (124.5 x 185.5 cm). A textbook specimen. Wonderful old color spectrum of natural dyes including lovely yellows, reds, and aubergine purple. Compare mine with the published "Star Milas". Refer to: 'Oriental Rugs Volume 4 Turkish' by K. Zipper & C. Fritzsche, 1989, plate 65, and dated 1800. It possesses the exact color palette and "Star" border design as my offering. Another published early Milas prayer rug by Bruggemann and Bohmer has the naivety and whimsically added row of amulettes on the upper band of the the ivory spandrals. Refer to: 'Rugs of the Peasants and Nomads of Anatolia', 1983, plate 73, page 256. My offering of a top shelf collector's Milas Prayer Rug comes in a fine state of preservation with evenly low (but not worn) pile and having had both the top and bottom outermost "sawtooth" guard borders professionally restored with recycled antique wool to perfectly match the original color palette. It takes a very discerning eye to even see this artistic restoration that now gives this rare collector carpet, once again, an aesthetically appealing visual presence.
