These are a pair of the first pattern issue jungle boot, as used by U.S. Army Special Forces and other early advisors in Vietnam. They are size 10 regular, dated 1963 (1963 on the top leather stays, but 1964 on the tongue tags) and are in excellent condition. They seem to have only been worn a few times perhaps and have standard wear to soles and uppers, with some use and storage dirt. The original insoles/liners are also present. The Direct Molded Sole (DMS) jungle boot were developed by Natick Labs and were first issued to U.S. Army Special Forces for use in Southeast Asia in the early 1960s, as a tropical replacement for the all-leather combat boot and the WWII tropical combat buckle boots. These boots feature leather and cotton/nylon duck uppers vulcanized directly to Vibram pattern soles. The top stay and back stay are leather (and lack the nylon ankle reinforcing band of the later style boots) and a pair of screened brass water drainage eyelets (partially covered with shoe/boot polish) are in the inside arch of each boot. They also lack the spike protective plate the later boots had. This is from my collection of Vietnam and Special Forces items that I collected about 20 to 25 years ago when I was in the Army at Fort Bragg and collecting Vietnam militaria in and around Fayetteville, North Carolina.
