Diary and Original Watercolor of Almon D. Griffin, Co. F, 1st US SharpShooters from Waterbury, Vermont. Listed on page 601 in Pecks Roster, Griffin is listed as a Musician (Bugle can be seen in watercolor), enlisted September 11th, 1861, mustered September 13th, 1861, deserted February 22nd, 1862, returned March 31st, 1863, wounded May 4th, 1863 and June 12th. The wounding must have occurred at Chancellorsville. Hard cover, leather bound diary in excellent condition, most of the entries being from August of 1863 through March of 1864. Written in flowing hand most of Griffins' entries are prosaic and religious in nature rather than day to day accounts. The most interesting are the large number of entries written by comrades in Hospital with Griffin. Names and units as follows;
Philip C. Gibby, 125th NY Volunteers Wesley McDowell, Co. F, 57th Pennsylvania Volunteers William H. Mix, Co. K, 2nd NH Volunteers Extract Nelson, Co. C, 12th NH Volunteers Capt. C. C. Perry, 1st ..... Battery, U.S.A. General Hospital, Brattleboro, Vt. Chas. B. Mead, Co. F, 1st U.S.SharpShooters, U.S.A. General Hospital, Brattleboro, Vt. Samuel E. Griffin (a cousin from Essex, Vt.), Co. I, 5th Vermont Volunteers Charles H. Bain, Co. E, 2nd U.S. SharpShooters (residence Middlebury, Vt.), Bedloes Island, NY Harbor, November 15th, 1863 James R. Elmer, Co. H, 5th Vermont Volunteers Lewis G. Allen, Camp Bullock, Virginia, March 30th, 1864 Most write words of friendship or condemnation of the South, some poems, some humorous. The book itself being about half full of writings. The period watercolor is signed on the reverse "Almon Griffin", and may have been done by Almon himself from a photographic image. I personally had the watercolor framed and matted in archival quality materials and a period frame. Outside frame dimensions 13 1/2 inches high by 11 1/2 inches wide, oval image 7 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. Image depicts a bearded Griffin with his Bugle and Musket in frock coat and forage cap with great coat thrown over a chair. With these items comes a newspaper clipping about Griffin in later life narrowly escaping being murdered by his wife who then shot herself. The article mis-identifies Griffins service as being in Co. E of the 16th Vermont, perhaps because of his deserter status, even though he returned and was wounded. This incident occurred in Jericho, Vermont when Almon was 78 years of age. This is a great group worthy of further research, I just do not have the time. Buyer adds $20.00 Priority Mail.
