2 1/2" Lunkenheimer Lunk Steam Whistle Balanced Valve Rare Bronze Flanged Valve, 200 Lbs W.S.P.When dealing with steam pressures greater than 150 psi or valves with openings bigger than 1 1/4" it becomes difficult for "...the operator to feel the effectiveness of the pull action of the operating mechanism." [Lunkenheimer catalog 58, 1920] Thus Lunkenheimer developed BALANCED valves, which use the force of the incoming steam pressure to actually help open the valve by overcoming (or balancing) the pressure holding the valve closed. A simple, but brilliant idea. With an adjustable fulcrum that allows for horizontal, vertical or oblique "pull" operation. Large steam whistle valves are very hard to find and indeed, most collectors will say it is easier to find big whistles, than to find big valves. Weight is a little over 20 pounds and the winning bidder will pay only for actual packing, insurance and shipping costs. Or local delivery in the Indiana/Michigan area can be arranged. The valve is in beautiful condition, professionally polished and finished with the special lacquer used on band instruments. Of course, blowing the valve on steam will vaporize the finish.
