Features a generous coating of small, gemmy Dioptase crystals to 2mm rich in intense emerald green color upon a brownish Quartzite matrix. Dioptase is a very rare mineral found mostly in desert regions w is forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidized zone of copper sulfide mineral deposits. Its formation is quite complex, lending to its rarity. It was originally found in the 18th century in present day Kazakhstan when copper miners thought they had found the emerald deposit of their dreams. Upon further analysis, it was determined to be a new mineral find and named Dioptase (Greek, dia, "through", and optima, "vision"). Dioptase is popular with mineral collectors and is occasionally cut into small gems, although its hardness of 5 does not lend well to cut gems.
