FOOTED BOWL / EGGNOG BERGEN GOLF ABP CUT GLASS NR GLASS CUTTER: The J. D. Bergen Company of Meriden, Connecticut SIGNATURE: None found PATTERN NAME AND REFERENCE: This popular pattern is named Golf. For a reference I have included the picture of a matching piece from page 41 of the ACGA purple colored Bergen catalog reprint from 1904. AGE: This piece was surely made sometime close to the 1904 catalog date mentioned above. BLACK LIGHT TEST RESULTS: Confirms American Brilliant Period (approximately 1876-1916) MEASUREMENTS: Both pieces together are 7-1/2" high. The bowl is 8-1/4" wide and the base is 7-5/8" wide. Both pieces are 3/8" thick. WEIGHT / RING: The weight is 7.1 pounds and it has a very good ring when tapped. BLANK / GLASS CLARITY: Both pieces are blown. The glass is bright and clear. CUTTING DETAILS: The main miters have good depth and the overall precision is very good. POLISHING QUALITY: The finish has a very crisp look and feel. CONDITION REPORT (ALWAYS VERY PICKY): With a close inspection of both sets of teeth I found a few scattered pencil point or less sized nicks, but nothing of any noticeable size at all. I'm sure the upper and lower teeth on this piece have probably seen some touchups over the years. A few tiny fan cut tips on the base are missing, but otherwise the majority of the cutting is intact w the pattern is close to the teeth. If you study both sets of teeth carefully you may notice a few minor extra bevels or differences in symmetry. The outside pattern areas of both pieces have some scattered pinpoint to pencil point sized nicks and tiny flakes, but nothing of any large noticeable size at all. The plug on the bottom of the bowl looks great and shows typical wear for its age, as does the bottom of the base. The top hole on the base is in great shape and the 2 pieces fit together extremely well. To be picky I'll mention some very minor scratches to the inside and outside of the bowl, but nothing easily noticed. Please remember that my condition reports tend to be far pickier than most and I think a typical person would say that this piece is in very good shape overall. FINAL COMMENTS: This piece was probably originally sold as a fruit bowl, an eggnog bowl, or as a small punch bowl. I'll leave it up to the new owner to decide how to use it or if it is just for display. Pieces cut in this early pinwheel type pattern turn up frequently and people who like to collect certain patterns may want to start with a choice piece like this.
