2 STERLING ANTIQUE DUTCH BRANDY, CREAM OR MONKEY HANGING SPOONS These two unusual antique repousse-style silver hanging spoons were made in the Netherlands. They are elaborate curved spoons designed to hang off of the edge of a bowl. They have been called "brandy", "cream", or "monkey" (mong kee in Dutch) spoons. My research produced a variety of history and uses for these spoons. Brandy Spoon: On St. Nick Day the Dutch have traditionally celebrated with a fruit brandy that was served in an antique silver bowl. The unique hanging brandy spoons were hung off of the edge of the bowl. Since each spoon had a different design people could easily tell which spoon was theirs (at least until they had consumed a little too much brandy!) Cream Spoon: They were also known as "cream" spoons and were used for individual servings of whip cream - also typically served from an antique silver bowl. Monkey Spoon: The Dutch word for monk is "monnik". DeMonnik is an old Dutch brand name for Jonge Jenever, a well-known traditional juniper-flavored spirit. In the Netherlands drinking is sometimes called "zuiging de monkey - sucking the monkey" and a drunkard is known as "a sucker of the monkey". Another theory is that the spoon looked like a monkey when hanging off of the edge of a bowl. Hanging silver spoons have been known to exist since the end of the 17 th Century. They were made for and exported to England and the USA in the 19 th Century. The Lion Passant Mark with attached key (which is on both of these spoons) indicates items that were made for export. This mark was used from 1853 to 1953. It also indicates silver purity or standard of .833. The graceful curved handles on these spoons allow them to hang from the edge of a bowl. One spoon measures 5 3/4" long and the other is 5 3/8" long. The bowls are large, measuring 2 3/4" long and 1 3/4" wide. Both spoons have scalloped edges around the bowl with a row of beading 1/8" inside of the scallops. The finial at the top of each handle is a small child or putti with flowers in each hand. One of the spoons also has a tiny rabbit on the top of the handle. The handle ends in a rolled scroll. T is a crest with a crown and a central oval medallion on the front of the handle. The scene in the bowl includes a windmill a cottage, trees and a hiker. Marks on this spoon include: a Lion Passant with attached key in a six-sided box. T are also some letters in a circle, which I can't make out. (It may be PLP). T is also an N2 in a rectangle. The second spoon has a basket of flowers on the front of the handle. The end of the handle is an animal head. The bowl shows a seated lady holding a cross, and some tree branches. Marks on this spoon include a Lion Passant with attached key in a six-sided box and letters in a circle (which I referred to above). Condition of both spoons is very good. The only condition issue is on the central oval on the crest. T are some tiny indentations. I can't tell if this is damage or if they have always been t
