A selection of Polished Chips containing Orthoceras Fossils. Each Piece is hand polished and shows at least one surface fossil. From the edge of the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Approx 300 Million Years old. ORTHOCERAS are extinct members of the Cephalopod family (nautilus, squid and octopus), and existed from about 435 million years ago, ( Silurian Period ), to 65 million, years ago,( Cretaceous period ). As the young ORTHOCERAS grew, it would construct ever larger chambers to live in, the old chambers were left empty so that they could be filled with air or water for buoyancy. As the creatures fossilised, over millions of years, natural minerals and elements were drawn into these chambers to give the crystilline effects that we see when the fossils are polished. The specimens displayed are part of our wide selection of FOSSILS from the northern edge of the Sahara Desert and are fossilised in black marble. They are all cut and polished by hand, by local craftsmen, thus benifiting the local community. These specimins are about 400 million years old. During the fossilisation process the organic parts of the creature Crystallised and all our fossils show this crystalline quality. read more
