2002 Christie's Important Silver, Objects of Vertu & Russian Works Art New York, 10/24/02 Christie's offers numerous exciting highlights, including Valentin Serov's 1909 portrait of the Russian industrialist Emmanuel Nobel, which poignantly shows the sitter's determination and will to succeed; and a rare work, The Mill, the Sunset, by Isaak Il'ich Levitan, one of Russia's first Impressionist painters. The painting had been lost for more than 90 years until its rediscovery in 1994 by Christie's Russian Works of Art Department. Further offerings include an important pair of tazzas depicting Russian rural life with peasant and nature working in harmony, breaking away from the Italian motifs taught at the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg during the early 19th century. Of course, no Russian works of art sale is complete without pieces bearing the famous name Fabergé. Christie's sale features, among others, an extremely rare three-color gold bonzai pine tree.
