2003 $50 Half-Ounce Lewis and Clark Expedition Commemorative Gold Proof Coin. This coin pays tribute to George Drouillard who was an important member of the expedition . George was half French-Canadian/half Shawnee Indian scout, hunter and "sign talker" employed as a civilian interpreter between the expedition crew and more than 50 Indian tribes encountered along the 8000 mile journey. This historic coin is from the first legal-tender Native American coin series. It was issued by the Shawnee Indian Nation and commemorates the 200th anniversary of the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark .
