Mint Cancels 2009Uncirculated $50 Gold Buffaloes

The U.S. Mint will cease production of 2009 uncirculated $50 American Buffalo coins in 2009.

Since 2006, uncirculated $50 buffalo coins have been offered to a select group of authorized dealers. These authorized dealers then offer the coins to investors and collectors worldwide.

In 2008, the Mint also offered bullion uncirculated and proof $5, $10 and $25 fractional gold buffaloes. The mintages for many of the fractional gold buffalo coins proved to be very low compared to one ounce gold buffalo coin mintages.

Despite the low mintages, the Mint was unable to allocate gold bullion reserves and was forced to eliminate many of their silver, gold and platinum products. The Gold Buffalo series was widely affected by this challenge.

With the introduction of the new American Buffalo 2 4-karat gold coin , investors now have access to gold bullion coins that each contain one troy ounce of the purest 24 Karat gold available in any bullion coin on the market. These incredible coins are manufactured at West Point by the U.S. Mint.

For years, you only had the option of purchasing 22-karat gold when buying American gold bullion coins. Because 24-karat gold is softer, it was seen as undesirable to create a bullion coin that could be easily damaged when circulated even though we haven’t used gold coins in transactions since the 1930’s. American gold coins have always had copper and silver mixed in for durability. Because of stiff competition in the gold investing world Congress authorized the production of the American Buffalo in order to compete with Canadian gold bullion coins and gold bullion coins produced by other nations.

The design of the American Buffalo gold coin has the profile of a Native American chief on the obverse side and a buffalo on the reverse. The American sculptor James Earle Fraser is responsible for this gold bullion coin's design. Each beautiful and profitable American coin is inscribed with .9999 Fine Gold, 1 OZ, Liberty , In God We Trust and E Pluribus Unum.

The American Gold Buffalo has a U.S. government guarantee.
