Hello and thank you for looking at our 2006 S Mint clad proof Kennedy half dollar roll of 20. Even though it was 40 years ago almost everyone who was alive in 1963 remembers exactly what they were doing at the moment they heard the news of President Kennedy had been shot. Sadly, just a few hours later, came the awful report that he had died. Only a few days after the tragedy the process of creating a new U.S. coin to honor our fallen President had begun. The quarter, half dollar or the dollar were all considered for the new design. Mrs. Kennedy did not want to replace Washington’s portrait on the quarter dollar. So on November 27 the decision was made that the half dollar would bear the new design. Work on the design began immediately with the U.S. Mint Chief Engraver, Gilroy Roberts sculpting the portrait obverse, while his longtime Assistant Engraver, Frank Gasparro, prepared the reverse model bearing the presidential seal. In the rush to get the new coin out for the New Year a legal problem had to be overcome. Under existing law, U. S. coin designs could not be changed more often than every 25 years; the Franklin half was then only 15 years old, and its replacement would quite literally require an act of Congress.
