Learn more about the American Silver Eagle silver coin and precious metals cycles: The American Silver Eagle : The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States and was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. This awe inspiring coin is only available in the one-troy ounce size and has a face value of one dollar. The American Silver Eagle is guaranteed by the United States government to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver and its content, weight, and purity are certified by the United States Mint. In addition to the bullion version, the United States Mint produces a proof version and an uncirculated version for coin collectors as well. The American Silver Eagle has been produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint.The coin’s obverse design was taken from the “Walking Liberty” design which was created by Adolph A. Weinman and had originally been used on the United States Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947.This design was cherished by the public and is by far one of the most appreciated designs of any coinage ever produced by the United States which is why it was brought back to life for the American Silver Eagle decades later. Inscribed with the year of minting, the word Liberty, and the phrase In God We Trust on the obverse side, this coin reminds us of what America truly stands for.The reverse design of the American Silver Eagle coin portrays an eagle behind a shield, it’s right talon holding an olive branch, and it’s left holding arrows which mirrors the Great Seal of the United States. The reverse side of the coin also carries thirteen five pointed stars located above the eagle’s head to represent the thirteen original colonies and is inscribed with the phrases “United States Of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver ~ One Dollar,” and on the banner that the eagle holds in it’s beak, “E Pluribus Unum”. The mint mark, if applicable, can be found on the reverse as well. This awesome design was created by John Mercanti.The first American Silver Eagle coin was struck in San Francisco on October 29, 1986. American Silver Eagle bullion coins do not have mint marks and were minted from 1986 to 1998 in San Francisco. Then, from 1999 to 2000, the coins were minted at Philadelphia and West Point. Since 2001, they have been minted at West Point only. From 1986 to 1992, proof American Silver Eagle coins were minted at San Francisco and bear the “S” mint mark. From 1993 to 2000, the proof coins were minted at Philadelphia and they bear the “P” mint mark. After 2001 to 2008, they were minted at West Point and the coins bear a “W” mint mark.Proof versions were not minted in 2009 but began again in 2010, and were minted at West Point bearing the “W” mint mark. From 2006 to 2008, the United States Mint issued a collectible uncirculated American Silver Eagle coin produced at West Point and they bear the “W” mint mark.
