NGC MS70 Early Releases Perfect coin 1 ounce 1 Dollar face value About American Silver Eagle The Silver American Eagle coins were first minted and released on November 24, 1986. The coins are pure .999 fine silver which is the finest grade silver coin ever minted and distributed in the United States of America. This is the only official investment grade silver bullion coin.This coin contains one troy ounce of pure silver. The coin is 1.598" in diameter and measures 0.117" thick. That translates to 40.6 mm diameter and 2.98 mm thickness.The coin features an obverse design based on the U.S. "Walking Liberty" half dollar that was first minted in 1916 designed by the German immigrant sculptor Adolf Alexander Weinman who also designed the famous U.S. "Mercury" dime which also came out in 1916.The reverse side of the coin has a bald eagle with shield along with 13 stars representing the 13 original American colonies. These stars are above the eagle's head. This heraldic eagle design is by John Mercanti.These coins are authorized by the United States Congress and their weight and content are certified by the United States Mint.
