Universally acknowledged as one of the most singularly beautiful coins ever produced, this outstanding work of Augustus Saint Gaudens is the realization of President Theodore Roosevelt's original dream and commission - to create a coin that is at once so strong and so beautiful that it would express to the world the liberties, rugged individualism, strengths and beauty that characterize our exceptional nation. The United States Mint is proud to offer this LIMITED OPPORTUNITY to own for yourself this Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, finally rendering the artist's vision as Saint Gaudens and President Roosevelt originally had in mind, employing the original artist's plates in concert with today's technology to create a coin of such depth and contrast as could not be mass-produced until now. This coin is genuinely a triumph in design and is the culmination of efforts over the course of a century that combined the visionary president, Roosevelt, and a world-renowned artist, Saint Gaudens. It is the ultimate version of Saint Gaudens' original 1907 ultra-high relief Double Eagle gold piece, which was never released into general circulation. Included with each coin is an official United States Mint companion book that chronicles the history and development of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin, describing in detail both the old and new technologies and processes which were employed to perfect this unique legal tender United States coin. Also included is a particularly elegant hard wood presentation box, which allows for the simultaneous display of both the obverse and reverse sides of the coin. There is even a magnet embedded into the crushed velvet-lined case which allows for the wood platform, which holds the coin itself, to stand at an angle within the presentation box for maximum viewing pleasure. Everything, right down to the fonts used to inscribe the outside of the presentation box, harken back to the early1900s when the coin was designed. On the coin's obverse, Liberty is personified by a statuesque, beautiful woman striding powerfully forward. A young eagle flying at sunrise is depicted on the reverse. The original 1907 Double Eagle is widely acclaimed to be among the most beautiful coins ever minted anywhere, and universally considered to be the pre-eminent visage encapsulating in one statement the beacon of liberty, vitality, and strength which the United States represents around the world. But despite Saint Gaudens' artistic achievement and Roosevelt's vision, the minting process at the time did not allow for the mass production of true high relief coins, and Saint Gaudens' vision was never fully realized - until 2008. By using 21st century design technology unavailable previously, the original Saint Gaudens coin plasters were freshly mapped using digital optical technology to capture and honor every tiny detail of the original. The ultra high relief sculpture was then modestly updated to reflect the new year of mintage, 2009, in Roman numerals (MMIX), and an additional four stars were added to represent the last four states admitted to the Union since 1907. Also, the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST was added, as this was not on the original 1907 version, and in raised-edge lettering on the coin is the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM.
