2011-D United States Army Uncirculated Commemorative Half Dollar Postal Commemorative Society Coin and Stamp Page The United States Army was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the raising of 10 companies of riflemen to fight the British in the early days of the American Revolution. The following day, Congress named George Washington as general and commander in chief of the Army. Over the centuries, the Us army has played a decisive role in protecting and defending the American people. The half dollar coin design depicts soldiers in times of peace and war. One side represents the contribution of the Us Army to society during peacetime, while the other side symbolizes the Us Army as the first national military service on the colonial era. The Us Mint added a surcharge of $5 per coin to the original sales price of the 2011 United States Army half dollar. The surcharge was paid to the Army Historical Foundation, which in turn used the funds to construct the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir near Washington DC. The US commemorative stamp honoring the role of the Us Army in World War II was issued on September 28, 1945 in Washington DC.
