This ginunting is a Bikolano design: the blade gets narrower toward the handle and it still has a belly for slicing. While the Bikol region is part of Luzon, many aspects of Bikolano culture and language are distinctly Visayan. While most Filipino Martial Artists associate the ginunting with Negros Occidental, they are also found in Albay, although they look quite different. A ginunting is basically a large blade that resembles one half of a pair of scissors.This is a solid working bolo with a nice and sharp 3/16” thick handforged carbon steel blade. Tabaks (bolos) from Tabaco City, Albay are reknowned for their hardness and durability, and this one is no exception. The handle was shaped by hand from Bicolano hardwood and measures 5”. There is a blackened steel bolster between the handle and the blade, which measures 16”.As with many Bicolano bolos, the tang is peened over at the end of the handle using a carbon steel keeper. This makes the tang significantly stronger and more durable. The scabbard was crafted from two pieces of wood that were varnished for protection from humidity and carved in the traditional Bicolano manner. The two halves are joined with synthetic wrap.There is a minor crack on the underside of the handle. While the handle appears rough, it was crafted entirely by hand and it is nice and tough.
