I handcraft exquisite frames using furniture grade Koa that's responsibly harvested on the Big Island, Hawaii. Koa wood is a stunningly beautiful exotic wood native to Hawaii. I manage the lumber processing facility that mills top choice Koa down for various uses so I have exclusive access to the very best quality of Koa for your frames. In ancient Hawaii, Koa wood was harvested exclusively for the alii class or royalty. Koa is part of the Acacia family of trees and is recognized as one of the finest textured woods in the world. Before sealing the frame with a finish, I hand sand every detail of the frame down to a 0000 grade of steel wool that removes every inconsistency and polishes the wood. I offer two types of finishes to protect the wood long after it arrives in your home. Lacquer produces a glossy surface shine, while a hand-rubbed application of Briwax (combination of beeswax and carnauba wax) gives the wood a lustrous patina. The miter joints on my frames are reinforced with a hand cut maple spline that adds superior strength and contrast for enhanced beauty. Be sure to look for this when purchasing frames; the end-grain-to-end-grain connection of a glued miter joint offers almost no strength on its own.
