The 23 machine-sewn double-appliqued cotton muslin stars are configured in irregular straight rows with each star showing great variation in its vertical axis. This scattering of the stars and that there are only 11 original stripes, of varying width, greatly adds to the flag`s folk art quality. The canton, unusual patinated blue 3-piece sleeve, and stripes are all machine-sewn cotton. Maine was the 23rd State admitted with this flag dating from ca 1876, the Centennial of American Independence. There is residual oxidation from the flag having been tacked to a pole at one time. AUCTIONEER`S NOTE: The size of this flag is 62 x 69.5`
