This Civil War issue rifle-musket sling remains in soft and pliable condition with no breaks but with minor crackling to the finished surface and eye appealing evidence of period use and wear as testimony to its age and originality. The piece bears a bold and clearly period ink identification in two places on the back side; B. A. Lee Our research of the Historical Data Systems Inc. rosters for both Confederate and Union Volunteer service produced only one match to B. A. Lee. He was Bristol A. Lee who was a 25 year old resident of Plymouth, Michigan when he mustered in on August 15, 1862 as a member of Co. C 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry . Pvt. Lee died of disease just past a year later and a month after Gettysburg on August 9, 1863. He died at Frederick, Maryland and is buried at Antietam National Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Maryland, gravesite: #2555. ring his term with the 24th Pvt. Lees regiment crossed the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg, December 12, 1862 and during the 13th and 14th supported a battery during the two days, being constantly under fire of the enemy's guns losing heavily in killed and wounded. Later at Port Royal the regiment made a brilliant attack, capturing a number of prisoners and driving the enemy from the place. The Twenty-fourth again crossed the Rappahannock on the 29th and drove the enemy from their works, capturing a number of prisoners with considerable loss to the regiment in killed and wounded. By the time of the Pennsylvania campaign the brigade of the 24th Michigan had earned the name of the Iron Brigade for its steadiness under fire. True to its name and reputation the Iron Brigade preformed valiantly at Gettysburg. The 24th Michigan went into action here with 28 officers and 468 men, and during the first day of the battle 22 officers were killed or wounded, 71 enlisted men were killed, 223 men were wounded, a total loss of 316.
