I take my family (10 of us) to WDW every year, and trade between 2 and 3 thousand every day for ten days. I cannot tell a fake from the real ones, but I've had people say all my pins were fake, when I know for certain at least 25% of them were purchased while I was there. I wear a vest with several hundred older pins, and people will many times buy a set to trade with me. That being said I have traded with cast members for a limited edition (1000) pin that is 5 years old and ask them how is it possible that 5 years after the pin edition of 1000 was issued that I saw at least 10 cast members with that pin to trade? They all say as far as they know the pin is good and we both know that is almost certainly impossible. There are 2 kinds of fakes out there, pins that had some flaw during manufacture and were supposed to be scrapped (scrappers) but were sold. And the others are genuine "Disney pins" that were manufactured in China, but after they filled Disney's order they continued making them to sell themselves, so while they are not exactly counterfeit, they are unauthorized.
