Matchlessantiques is offering smiths and collectors this RARE 25 lb. SHATTO & SON Power or Trip Hammer. Power hammers have been used to forge metal since the early 1900s. They have been used to help forge metal ever since the smith decided that he needed more capacity to forge a larger mass than he was capable of doing with his own hand. This need generated the idea of using an assistant as a striker, multiple strikers, and then the power hammer. Today power hammers are still one of the most efficient ways to increase production and profits. This Hammer should forge iron up to 2 inches in diameter. In ten minutes this machine can do the work it would take a blacksmith hours to do by hand. This Power Hammer was made by SHATTO & SON of LORIMOR, IOWA. and weighs 775 lbs. A person in the trip hammer business told me this Shatto is only the third one he has ever heard of. Power Hammer books don't even list them, so I think you could classify this as a Rare Power Hammer. Don't miss this chance to own a very hard to find power hammer.This Shatto needs to be rebuilt including new babbit bearings. I took the main bearing caps off and their is no rust on the journals. The clutch is a friction clutch. The ram guides are adjustable and seem to be in good condition. The bottom die is flat and the upper die is flat then tapers back. The foot lever does engage the clutch. The power hammer most likely ran off a line shaft, so a new motor mounting plate will have to be made. The measurements are: height 58", width 22", depth 22", clutch assembly diameter 11 1/2", top die " x 1 5/8" x 2 3/4", bottom die 4 1/8" x 2 3/4", weight 775 lbs.
