Three old Marwal-Type Busts Mother and two kids, daughter and son, Family (Ohana) Hula Girl / Boy Statues Vintage Hawaiiana Tiki Collectables Island & Polynesian Decor Aloha! This is a once in a lifetime chance to get an entire family (Ohana) grouping of these great old Marwal-type figures. These are old, but I do not think that they are actual manufactured Marwal Pieces. I think that they were homemade, by a talented craftsman sometimes in the 1960's . I can NOT stress how hard it is to find the Kids ( Kikis) in really good shape. It is even more rare to find them TOGETHER AS A MATCHED SET . This auction is for the Kane (Boy) Statue, Wahine (girl) bust, and the Mother is thrown in to complete the set. I do not think that the kids and mother were made at the same time or even by the same person, But, Adoption is a beautiful thing isn't it. The Kids were obviously made by someone with much more talent than the mother. As a matter of fact, I am having a hard time telling if the kids were not mass produced Official Marwal Pieces. But, I am erring on the side of caution, and saying that they are not. Because, these are not official Marwal pieces, t is no minimum or reserve on the auction. Someone out t is going to get a great DEAL! Anyone who collects quality Hawaiian antiques knows that the cornerstone of any great collection is a Marwal bust of a gorgeous Hawaiian Wahini or girl. With the pensive, almost sad, look in her eyes and a huge Yellow Hybiscus behind her right ear. Her lips are soft pink . She is a real looker! According to a popular myth, these were first struck to mark the passing of the beloved beautiful Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani , made famous by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Not true, but it's a great story. They are so popular that they sell for astronomical amounts in the local shops and Antique Stores in Honolulu, Waikiki, Hana, Las Angeles, Las Vegas, and Japan. I have personally seen the real ones fetch $350 to $450 with the American and Japanese collectors. They are Very Hot in Japan and South Korea. They also are one of the big ticket items at the "Wiki Wiki Antique Shows" held in Hawaii. As a huge collector of Tiki-related items, with a big collection myself, I have come accross these quite a bit. Without question, this is the Best set that I have ever come across. Because of the size of our collection, I am VERY picky about the things that I purchase. I have passed up many great items because they were slightly flawed. These have recently been listed on EBay as chalkware, which they are NOT. Chalkware was a cheap disposable process (with no details) used for carnival and State Fair give-aways. These are rare, especially in this condition, and lots of love and hard work went into creating them. Maybe I'm not totally clear about what chalkware is, but as far as I know these are created the same way that all fine pottery or ceramics are -by being fired in a kiln. If I am wrong about this, please let me know ASAP. These were purchased in a small town in New Mexico while we were on vacation at Carlsbad Caverns. The nice old shopkeeper had no idea of the treasure she possessed. I could not leave them t unappriciated, and collecting dust. Because of the age, this island family probably witnessed the Roswell Incident with thier own eyes. (LOL) :-) I paid about $40 years ago. The only thing that could be considered a flaw is a very small scratch on the base of the young girl (Please see scans ) Size is about 10 inches high and about 6 inches wide for the mother. The kids are just slightly smaller than this. Insurance is highly recommended for this item. It will be bubble-wrapped within a inch of it's life and boxed very well.
