THREE ORIGINAL, 1960's VINTAGE DODIE THAYER 'LETTUCE LEAF' MAJOLICA ART POTTERY PIECES 6.5 inches; 3 inches; 1/2 inch in EXCELLENT CONDITION ! ! This was Jackie O's favorite pottery, and her collection of it delighted her guests throughout her 'reign' as our First Lady and tafter at her many residences. Jacqueline Kennedy was known for her impecable taste. Her admiration of Dodie Thayer's realistic "Lettuce Leaf" work immediately placed a demand on the limited availability of these delightful pieces. When Sotheby's auctioned off items from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis estate in Apri l, 1996, the following were some of the results. Lot 918: A Dodie Thayer pottery lettuce leaf salad bowl, circa 1965 (est. $150-$200). $3,450 Lot 919: A pair of pottery cabbage leaf bowls, circa 1965 (est. $100-$150). $3,450 Lot 920: A set of 7 pottery lettuce leaf small dishes, circa 1965 (est. $75-$100). $3,450 Sotheby's estimated the values of the pieces in the auction based on their own merits. You can see how the Jackie factor made prices skyrocket. Some of the items in the auction sold for over 100 times their current market values -- just because Jackie owned them. I know why Jackie loved these pieces! I've been fortunate to have had the chance to enjoy these in my own home for a while. The three set together in a display is captivating. read more
