MUSEUM GRADE 1/3 TO LIFE SCALE MODEL NATIVE AMERICAN "INDIAN" BIRCH BARK CANOE IMPORTANT OFFERING! Allston Antiques takes the utmost pride in offering this ultra rare museum grade 1/3 to life scale and completely accurate 82" long & 21" wide model of a Native American "Indian" birch bark canoe. We have been accumulating research information about this piece. Our main point of reference is Robert LaVertue, noted sailing canoe and antique wooden boat restoration expert. Bob cautioned us to hold this listing back as he feels certain that we would be making a huge mistake in letting an extremely valuable piece slip through our hands. We have never become paralyzed behind any piece. If we make a mistake to the buyer's benefit than we are truly happy that one of our customers made a score. Plus we walk away from it being enriched by the education we obtained from the experience. Don't we all deserve a score from time to time? Its a big part of the fun of this business and the day it stops being fun is the day we will find something else to do. Back to this remarkable find: Its truly too large to be a conventional model. Accuarate average size is about 18 foot long. If it is it was made for a museum exhibit the plan sought 100% accuracy as is the case here. We would imagine that the bark skin is applied and fastened with some contemporary resin as opposed to pine pitch. It has bent oak gunwhales and bent splint ribbed construction with cross support rods and front and back solid wood braces. Every attention to detail was employed in the construction of this piece. Our information from the seller (the little he honestly knew) was that this was made in the Adirondacks about 30 years ago and as long as he could remember was in the family's lake side summer home. Ever see the 'modest' little summer lodges up there? They call them "mansions" anywhere else! Frankly this canoe looks slightly more recent due to its spotless condition. Its always been housed in a controlled envirornment. We have seen and handled a lot of vintage boats and until now never had the pleasure of handling anything like this beauty.
