This auction is for three Stereoviews/ Stereographs of the Black Hills , Photographed by William H. Illingworth. Also, Published by William H. Illingworth, No. East Seventh Street , St. Paul , Minnesota . The three cards are in pretty good condition. Numbers and titles of the cards are: 801 Camp at Hiddenwood Creek., 817 Elk Horn prairie., and 838 Looking West from Granite Knob. Dates are note stamped on the cards but I believe they are circa 1870âe(tm)s. The reverse side of these cards is shown in one of the pictures. The title is Stereographs of the Black Hills and is lists 800-854 with individual titles along with a brief description about the event(s). William H. Illingworth (1844 - 1893) was an English photographer who accompanied both Captain James L. Fisk 's 1866 expedition to the Montana Territory and Lt. Colonel George Custer's 1874 U.S. military expedition into the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory (now western South Dakota ). Because of Illingworth's images, historians have been able to determine the exact boundaries and layouts of several of the 7th Cavalry's 1874 camps, the condition of the Black Hills forests along the expedition's route, and the appearance of many of the soldiers and civilians who accompanied the expedition. In this way, Illingworth's work provided later generations insight into key events of his time. If you have any questions or information you can share about these cards please feel free to contact me. Thanks and good luck.
