33" Masonic Knights Templar Thrust and Cut Side Sword Ceremonial Masonic Sword Freemasonry Knights Templar Overall Length: 33.5 " Blade: Sharp Blade Length: 26.75 " Blade Material: 440 Stainless Steel Handle Length: 5.75 " Scabbard Material: Steel Condition: Brand New The side sword is the descendant of the arming sword and the predecessor of the rapier. Created during the 16th and 17th centuries, the sword was the solution for fighting both heavily armored soldiers and unarmored civilians. Although the arming was sword effective for both cut and thrust attacks, the heavy armor required a thinner blade to penetrate the gaps; the heavy blade of the arming sword hampered a warriors ability to fight an unarmored opponent. The solution to this problem was a thinner blade that was still capable of thrusting and cutting attacks. As the guard was opened up the warrior was allowed to place their fingers on the lower section of the sword blade. As the side sword evolved, it began to look less like an arming sword and more like a rapier. By the end of the Renaissance the side sword had fully evolved into the rapier. In later centuries, the Knights Templar adopted the Side Sword design. The sword was used by the Knights Templar both ceremonially as well as functionally.
