Being in the midst of hunting season in Michigan had something to do with it. And whether you are a hunter or not, somehow that pioneer hunter spirit is in us all. In varying degrees, to be sure. But t, none the less. The knife art I bring to auction is a wonderful representation of the hunter/skinner design. This piece made by J. D. Clay, marked "1-73" (January 1973), is one of the knife art designs J.D. produced for public consumption in the infancy of his career. Look closely. You can see the quality of detail and use of the very best materials The hollow ground blade is shaving sharp, made for skinning, caping and preparing game for camp kitchen or travel.I purchased this piece for my collection in 1973 from J. D. Clay at a show. His pieces reflect so much more care and quality and craftsmanship that it was worth it to me at least to pay a few more dollars for his pieces. In looking back the 34 years since acquiring his knives, they were a bargain.I never used or sharpened this beauty. I am a hunter, but didn't feel comfortable in hunting with a piece of knife art like this one. Nuts to that!! I had a very expensive scoped rifle. Why would I just want a hunting knife of similar value. Take it from me. If you are fortunate enough to win this auction, please use it in the field. It's made to use. Look at the strength built into this beauty. A full tang hollow ground blade, the top of which knurled to keep your thumb out of trouble when you are using it to prepare game for use.If you are the winner, jot down my email address and let me know how this knife works for you. Whether you hunt or not, I would be interested in your thoughts comparing this J.D. Clay piece with others of your collection.
