Rare Fire Obsidian rough from Oregon. 1 piece, 297 grams. A larger piece with very broad 5 1/2" long fire band. The color in the fire is a bit subdued but has very intricate patterns and good red/yellow mirror reflection. Nice piece for a huge knapped spear point or some very large stones. The whole top face has been knapped by hand down to the fire band. There are some more bands in the piece, could be another fire band but not sure. This is the real, precious Fire from Glass Butte in Central Oregon. The only location to produce this variety of obsidian. The color play comes from light refracting from thin layer of magnetite within the obsidian. When ground down to this band a stunning play of color is the result. It has an effect all it's own. It reminds me of a combination of the color play in black opal and ammolite combined, but different. You must be very careful not to grind through the fire band, it is paper thin. I recommend a flat buff top polish for best play of color. In most cases you will want to get as close as possible to the fire band before polish. These rough pieces are chipped to exposed the fire band. Each shows a band of fire and each piece will produce a killer gemstone. Great investment for the professional lapidary or anyone who wants to cut incredible cabs or specimens. You get all the stones shown. Pics read more
