I purchased this sword recently from the Crain Estate Auction in the small town of Canyon, TX. Mr. Crain was a large and reputable Civil War collector and this sword is testament to that fact. The sword is engraved "Gen. George Stoneman" on the cross guard. The engraving appears to be authentic, not recent, not faked. I've researched photos of the General and have had a hard time finding a good one that clearly shows this sword, but here is a wikipedia link to a photo that shows the grip of the sword if you are able to zoom in: /wiki/File:GeneralStoneman%26Staff.jpg
General Stoneman was a Union Cavalry General and served under Gen's McClellan and Hooker. In 1882, he was elected the fifth governor of California. If you would like to see any additional close-up photos, please feel free to email me and I will send them to you. There are no passed down letters, etc. that verify if this is truly Gen. Stoneman's sword but everything indicates that it is. The photos I've found show Stoneman with this exact style of sword, the collector was highly regarded and had a number of other authentic original items in his collection (including the only traveling dentist chair of Doc Holliday which sold for a ghastly amount, a .38 revolver which belonged to Annie Oakley, and other one of a kind items). Please feel free to ask questions. ***There are a significant number of people watching this item, so I thought it would be useful to provide some further details about the sword itself: - The sword is just shy of 42" long - The blade measures 5/16" thick at it's thickest point - There is no movement between the grip and the blade, it is very solid - The grip appears to be made of some type of thin leather or twill materials and is wrapped with a thin twisted wire, the grip is in very nice shape - Unfortunately, I don't have a scale at my house, but the sword is very weighty. Several pounds. Feel free to ask questions. Thanks. +++UPDATE+++ *****I have received an outside offer very near my "buy it now" price. Since there are so many people watching this item, I feel like the fair thing to do is give anyone watching a chance to purchase the sword. I will leave this auction up for 24 more hours (until 7:30pm Central Time). If nobody has chosen to "buy it now" for $3,499.00 at that time, I will end the auction and accept the offer I have.
