3 Piece Brass/Metal Scabbard for a Curved Sword
Decorated with Heraldic Motif 22 Photos Total, PAGE BOTTOM! Request more if you need them. Total Length of the Scabbard is about 32 inches This reminded me of something I've seen at Museum shops. But even good replicas, presentation swords and theatrical scabbards can have historical value. I don't know the history of it but will give you all that I know. The price is high with or best offer for that reason, so that I can continue research while it is on auction. This was purchased from a woman who said it belonged to her Dad, she said he had it for a while, she was in her 60's. That is the best I can do to date it without an expert. I purchased this because I really liked it and enjoy spending the time to do the research, but the last time I attempted something like this is took me two years to find out all the information. So, this is how it goes... The Heraldic Motif contains a double headed eagle with crown, a unicorn, the serpent, also there is a man in a boat with an eye piece. This had some gold plating over it but it is worn particularly on the serpent handle. First Piece: 14 oz Brass The Serpent could be a Basilisk, it is made of a heavy brass. It passes the brass tests, when you rub your fingers on it it smells like brass. The brass is detailed with the floral motif that is on the other 2 pieces. It is not one entire piece of brass but two pieces joined, as pictured This is hollow inside, as pictured, almost looks like it could be the handle of a sword. Condition: It was cleaned, as was the entire piece with lemon and salt. It was very dirty when I purchased it. You can see the green where the two pieces join. There was wear on the handle from use particularly where the flat undecorated piece runs down the center, as pictured. 2nd Piece : 5.1 ounces Metal The bottom 2 pieces are some other material that does not attract a magnet. Medium to light weight metal that can be molded. This piece is hollow inside, there is a close up of the inside below. The ring attached is secure and for purposes of use is fine, there is some tarnishing in the detail as pictured. There are 2 pieces of metal joined. The primary animal on this piece is a lion. 3rd Piece : Approx. 11.3 ounces of Metal & Wood The main part of this Scabbard that covers the bottom of the sword is lined in a hard wood. The wood had been worn with age and small pieces fell out when I tapped it, on first purchase. The heraldry motif is repeated and expanded on in this piece. The rings are secure on the scabbard and although this is a light weight metal this piece is slightly heavy because of the wood lining. 1 piece of metal is molded over the wood, where they are joined on the outside there is an area with some damage. Please enlarge the side photos of the sword to see the entire edge. A small damaged part is shown close-up in the photos above. The tip of the Scabbard has a separate piece. The metal appears like a pedestal with a floral motif. 22 Photos Total, PAGE BOTTOM! MEASUREMENTS Serpent head to bottom is 6 inches Serpent cross section is 5 inches Serpent head is about 3/4 of an inch thick and 2 inches long - by head I mean the piece that bends and looks like a handle. The 2nd piece is 1 3/4 wide and 6 inches long The 3rd piece is 20 inches long tip to tip Total length is 32 inches HOUSEHOLD I have a cat, she is guarding the sword, her choice.
