This is an auction for a set of antique HICKS & MEIGH WARRANTED No. 5 IRONSTONE PLATES in the Waterlily Pattern!!!!!!!! An excellent example of antique chinoiserie, these plates are a set of 4 luncheon size, we suppose, measuring 8 1/4" round. These plates are being sold for a friend and offered for sale to the high bidder. We did some research online which revealed one set of this exact same pattern and mark, which the auction company dated to 1824.
The plates are in good condition for their nearly 200 year old age. The first plate is excellent, with no chips, cracks, repairs, or breakages. The back has three rough spots, firing pontils that are usually present on old porcelain or ironstone. T is utensil wear. The second plate, also excellent, with no chips, cracks, repairs, or breakages. The back also has the three firing spots. The third plate has a hairline pattern Y on the bottom, which we have photographed for you to see. This does not go through to the top of the plate, so I guess, it would be characterized as a bottom hairline? This is not rough and t are no other breakages, cracks, repairs, or chips to this plate. Bottom firing marks are present. The colors on this plate are bright. The fourth plate has a hairline crack on the upper left, at about the ten o'clock position. This measures approximately 1 3/4". This hairline DOES go through from top to bottom, however, t are no other chips, cracks, repairs, or breakages to this plate. The hairline is not rough. The plate also has the three firing pontils or spots on the bottom. Not too bad for their age. Some of the colors are muted and faded, but still a nice solid set. The Oriental design is the Waterlily pattern. English potters often imitated or copied oriental designs. The colors present on these plates are cobalt blue, burnt orange, red, pink, orange and some green. When you flip the plates over, each is marked with the blue Ironstone, Warranted, No. 5 circling a Crown. We have found similiar plates in the Collector's Encyclopedia of English China by Mary Frank Gaston. Maybe they would make a nice addition to your English ironstone collection?
