4 Pages of Handwritten Notes by George Davidson; this appears to be notes taken from the book "Along Alaska's Great River by Schwatka; on very faintly lined tablet paper.George Davidson, for more than half a century, played a dominant role in the beginnings of scientific activity on the Pacific Coast. Davidson's first work, as head of a U.S. Coast Survey party, was that of preparing charts and other navigational aids for the guidance of the many Gold Rush ships then converging on the coast. For forty-five years he charted virtually every mile of the extended coastline, from the Mexican border to northernmost Alaska, and prepared successive editions of the Coast Pilot, those bulky compendiums of navigational data so authoritative and useful that they became known to a generation of West Coast mariners as "Davidson's Bible." Davidson was also referred to as "the father of western science" because of the active part he played in other fields of research. He established and maintained for many years the first astronomical observatory on the Pacific Coast, and it was mostly through his influence that the San Francisco capitalist James Lick provided the funds to build the great observatory that bears his name. He headed transit of Venus expeditions to Japan and Corro Roblero and in 1867, conducted geographical reconnaissance of Alaska and urged its purchase from Russia. Later he was, among numerous other special assignments, sent to China, India, and Egypt to study irrigation and reclamation methods, and to Paris to inspect and report on instruments of precision. For many years he was active in the affairs of the California Academy of Sciences and the Geographical Society of the Pacific and served as president of both organizations. In 1870 he was appointed Professor of Geodesy and Astronomy at the University of California, served as Regent from 1877 to 1884, and in 1895 became Professor of Geography, which post he held until shortly before his death in 1911.
