Gosho Ningyo (Palace Dolls) Motif

DESCRIPTION:
This a traditional fukusa , traditionally used in Japan for the formal presentation of gifts on an unadorned tray (often in old-style arranged-wedding betrothals). The fukusa is placed over the tray and the gift (usually a dowry money gift in ornamental envelope) is presented to the groom's family.

This one is made of fine chirimen (crepe) silk fabric and has a tassel at each corner. The main motif is of Gosho Ningyo (Palace Dolls), a favorite traditional theme while the back/bottom reads kotobuki (tr: Felicitations/Congratulations; Longevity ).
This piece measures 15.5 X 16.125( 1/8 ) Inches (39.37cm X 40.96cm) and is estimated as at least from the 1950's-1960's.
CONDITION: GOOD, a few minimal very tiny stains (cannot be seen except from inches away --see closeups); no holes nor tears ; Colors are subdued but not faded; center field is tan and rest is orange-red; also, coverlet has fold creases from long-term storage; T is a thin padding/liner inside which is probably cotton, so can be taken apart for variety of uses if not displayed.

Recommended for display or for use as cutter for artists/quilters etc.
