MATA ORTIZ - PUEBLO POTTERY HEIGHT: 13 INCHES GIRTH: 41 INCHES BOTTOM: ROUND INSIDE VESSEL: The feel and look of unfinished clay. WEIGHT: 6 POUNDS VESSEL OBSERVATIONS: This is not a "Shiny" piece of pottery . It appears to have an ashen-grey appearance from burning on the open fire. I have never cleaned this piece. SIGNED BY THE ARTIST: GLORIA HERNANDEZ (one of her earliest works) AGE OF PIECE: Unknown. I bought it 20 years ago in an antique shop, Healdsburg, California. Mata Ortiz Pottery represents a genuine effort to create original designs by employing exactly the same materials and methods used centuries ago. Clay sources are the same, human hands form the pottery ( no potter's wheel ) and paint colors are all natural, coming from minerals. Paint brushes are made from human hair to apply the designs. Firing is done over open ground, not in a kiln . Gloria Hernandez is a prolific and versatile artist. Gloria's penchant for detailed, geometric designs is perfectly balanced by her more playful excursions into man and animal motifs. Much of Gloria's breathtaking work is done in red clays. Other Information: I have verified that Gloria Hernandez does indeed live in Mata Ortiz. I also verified through an Indigenous Art Gallery that the piece is Mata Ortiz made by inhabitants of Mexico, just south of the Arizona border. I was told that the shape of the vessel, along with the neck/rim and round bottom are all indicators as well as the painting style. Shipping: Insurance upon request.
