However, this word is now associated with the shields used by the Roman Legionaries. The shield originally began as a round shield but eventually turned to the more rectangular design during the imperial period. The shields were typically constructed of strips of wood making the shield strong but still light in weight. The shield could be used offensively especially the boss (metal hand guard), this would often times be used to strike opponents since the metal was very dense. The Scutum was a crucial piece of the Roman armies battle tactics.
